Casual Evidence is a project developed during an artist residency at Studio Kura in rural Kyushu, Japan.
Through video, zines, photography, scans, drawings and sound, the project documents fragments of everyday life, movement and observation, shaped by unfamiliar surroundings, skateboarding culture and the experience of being temporarily immersed in a
different environment.
Process & References
The process behind Casual Evidence evolved through daily documentation, skateboarding and collecting fragments from life on the island.
Photographs, print experiments and observations gradually formed an expanding wall installation, while the zine became a more refined and distilled interpretation of the
same experiences.
The visual references behind Casual Evidence were shaped by old skate videos, fine art skate films and the quiet atmosphere of
rural Japan.
A central part of the project was the idea of “terroir”, not changing the place to fit me, but slowly blending into it and allowing the environment to shape the work naturally.
Skateboarding, walking and moving through the island every day made it easier to observe, document and eventually create the videos, images and printed materials that became part of the project.
